I thought of many things I could write today - it is April Fool's Day, and I thought I'd announce my conversion to Essene Christianity or something along those lines, but all that went out the window last night when I took a trip to Ralph's to get some cat food.
What did I find?
COKE! GLORIOUS, REAL SUGAR-FILLED PASSOVER COKE!
Here is a link (to myself) about why it is so awesome.
I would like to take a moment to thank the Jews and their weird and bizarre dietary/religious laws for bringing us this awesome stuff. Coke is kosher, but the Jewish dietary laws change specifically for Passover and there is some prohibition against grain-based items. Perhaps one of you brave readers can enlighten me. At any rate, every year Coke does a run of Kosher for Passover Coke which uses real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, and it tastes so much better.
Living here in San Diego, it's pretty easy to get Coke with real sugar all year round - they sell it that way in Mexico. But the Mexican Coke is different. Coke has different blends of Coke mix, sugar, and carbonation for every market that they serve, and the Mexican coke is a little too sweet for me. What is interesting is that every year that I've been buying the Passover coke, the Coke has changed a bit from year to year. This year is great - very, very smooth with an almost root-beer like quality to it. Almost creamy.
Sadly, you can't buy 100 of them and keep them for years. The shelf life on the two-liter bottles is, according to Coke, two months. According to me it's about five.
Look for the yellow cap on the two-liter bottle. It is fantastic. This year, the lettering on the cap is red, not black.
